December 2009
The President’s Corner
By: Bill Broome
As 2009 nears its end, it is always appropriate to look
back at the accomplishments, or lack thereof, that our
association has achieved. It has been a very good year!
We made great strides in better understanding the water
quality of our Lake, and when all is reviewed, we are in
much better shape that most of us would have thought.
We also have a plan in place to keep current and up to
date in reviewing the water quality on an ongoing basis.
We do need your help in controlling the ph level, and you
can do that by not using bleach or bleach products in
cleaning your docks and watercraft.
Fund raising was another focus of your Officers and
Board for the year simply because the prices on
everything we do were increasing. I am pleased to tell
you that we are in pretty good shape financially due to
the amazing support you have shown. Many of you “dug
deep” when asked and donated to help cover the cost of
fireworks, as well as supported all of the fundraising
efforts of the Association. These included t-shirt and cap
sales, the 4th of July BBQ sale and the annual Yard Sale
and Hot Dog Plate sale in October. We thank you!!
Membership growth and participation was another of our
goals, and unfortunately, here we have fallen short of
our goals. Membership has held steady but has not
grown as we would have liked, and although meeting
participation has improved, it’s still only about 10% of our
membership on average. Folks, this is where we need
your help! If you’re a member, check your newsletter to
make sure you are current on your dues. And then on
the 1st Thursday evening of each month, join us at McGill
Fire Station at 7 p.m. for our monthly meetings. Get
involved and help us continue to grow our Association
and improve our Lake.
It’s nearing the time for our annual Christmas dinner and
we look forward to seeing you there. Details are
covered elsewhere in the newsletter and hopefully you
can join us for a great evening of fellowship and food!
This event replaces our regular December meeting.
There are no better cooks than those around Lake
Secession and I look forward to a great meal. This year
we are going to add a “Silent Auction” to the dinner
and need your help! We need 20-25 of you to donate
baked goods such as cakes, pies or other desserts to
the auction. These will be placed around the Iva Civic
Center with a bid sheet attached, and during the
evening, you simply pick out the dessert you want to
take home, and place your bid on the attached sheet.
It’s that simple, but you will need to check back often to
assure that no one wants it more than you do!! It’s a fun
way to help offset the cost associated with the dinner,
and have a really great dessert to share with family and
friends over the Holidays. To donate, please call me at
446-7625 or Vicki at 348-2011.
We have a really good thing going at Lake Secession
but need your help to keep it thriving. I look forward to
seeing you over the winter at our monthly meetings!
2009 Annual Yard Sale
By: Vicki Zeitler
October 24th, we held our annual Lake Secession Yard
Sale at the McGill Fire station. Much thanks goes out to
all of you that helped, and supported us by donating and
shopping. It was a beautiful sunny day full of activity.
We had cookies, sticky buns and coffee sales in the
morning, hot dog plate sales in the noon hours and sold
a lot of great items kindly donated to us from folks
around the lake area. All while we were blessed with
entertainment with the great quartets, The Solid Rock
Singers and the New Born Singers. This was a very
prosperous sale, largest so far. We would like to keep
adding on more activities and increase our donations of
items each year to better the lake around us and to keep
up the fireworks, parade and such. So please keep
saving your goodies and send them our way for next
year and again, we "thank you" all for your participation.
Iva Depot Days
By: Vicki Zeitler
On October 10th, the association set up a booth in Iva at
the annual Iva Depot Days. The weather forecast was
threatening us with a lot of rain but turned out to be
sunny. We sold Lake Secession T-shirts, caps, license
plates and memberships. We were able to share a lot of
information about our association and Lake Secession to
a lot of people. We held door prizes which consisted of
a fishing rod and reel, coffee maker and telescopic
paddle. The winners were: Chris Latimer-Anderson
(very happy for his rod & reel), and Arvetta Powell-
Anderson, and Sue Butler-Iva.
We would like to thank all the ones that helped with the
booth and a very special thank you to Ralph Patterson
for donating the booth rental. We are planning to do this
again next year and encourage you to visit/join us!
FACTS ABOUT OUR WATER QUALITY
By: Water Quality Committee
The South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control (DHEC) takes water samples to
monitor water quality throughout SC, including samples
in the Rocky River and Lake Secession. DHEC’s
monitoring program, including where samples are taken
and what is measured, is described in State of South
Carolina Monitoring Strategy for Calendar Year 2009
(http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/water/docs/strategy.pdf).
DHEC’s river and lake water sampling is intended to
assess whether Lake Secession water meets the
standards for freshwaters as established in DHEC’s
R.61-68, Water Classification & Standards
(http://www.scdhec.gov/environment/water/regs/r61-68.pdf).
The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a stream gage on
the Rocky River about 2.5 miles upstream from the
northern end of Lake Secession. The gage is located at
the Flat Bridge Road bridge over the Rocky River.
Stream height and volume of flow are reported hourly
and anyone can look at current and past conditions
(going back to 1989) at the USGS website
(http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?site_no=02187910).
DHEC analyzes the water samples from Lake Secession
and the Rocky River for a number of parameters and
submits the results to the U.S. EPA. The data is stored
in an EPA water quality database named STORET and
anyone can look at them
(http://iaspub.epa.gov/tmdl_waters10/attains_get_services.stor
et_huc?p_huc=03060103).
If you go to this website you
can scroll down a list of sampling sites in GA and SC to
find DHEC’s two sampling locations on Lake Secession
and the one on Rocky River upstream of the lake. A
great deal of information is available, some going as far
back as 1999, but the format is confusing.
The LSRRPOA Water Quality Committee is examining
the results of recent water quality sampling and
comparing the data to appropriate standards for good
water quality. No problems are apparent.
Some parameters DHEC has measured include turbidity,
pH, biochemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon,
alkalinity, fecal coliform bacteria, phosphorus, several
forms of nitrogen, and the metals cadmium, chromium,
copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel, and zinc. The
Committee will report on their examination at future
monthly LSRRPOA meetings and in a future Anchor
Line.
